Reaping What We Sow
Galatians 6:7-8 (New International Version)
7Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. 8The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature[a]will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.
I planted seeds of all shapes and varieties in my large 150 foot by 30 foot garden, many years ago. Initially as tiny seedlings pushing up the sod, they weren’t readily distinguishable from each other. Some varieties continued to bare a resemblance to each other as they grew. The foliage of watermelon looked so much like the cucumber plant and the zucchini wasn’t much different from acorn squash, yet each fruit was to have distinct flavors and characteristics.
During the glorious time of harvest, after all my labors of nurturing, I harvested exactly the varieties I had sown. Into each seed planted had been a DNA designed by God to reproduce after it’s kind. Regardless of my hopes or expectations, tomato seeds would produce tomato plants, and corn reproduced after it’s kind.
So it is with the words we sow. We sow seeds of truth from God’s word and we will see it bear fruit. The scriptures tell us that “ His words do not return to Him void but they accomplish that which they were intended to do.” (Isaiah 55:11) paraphrased.
His word tells us “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.” Also “Greater is He who is in me, than he who is in the world.”
When we confess otherwise, such as “I can’t” we are not sowing the seeds the lord has given us in His word. When we continually confess seeds of pain and sickness, why would we expect any other result than pain and sickness? So many of us tend to proclaim the problems we are facing without declaring what the word of God has to say about it.
My friend had a kidney stone. She was in unbearable pain. I love how she phrased the issue. She said “the fact is the doctors say this stone is causing a blockage and is causing a backflow to my kidney, BUT the truth is I am healed according to the word of God.” She kept up her confession of faith. When she returned to the medical agents she still had not seen the fruit of her confession of God’s word. Suddenly she felt better. The stone had not passed, but she suddenly was free from the debilitating pain. She had spoken the truth of God’s word to the situation. She did not deny that she had been afflicted, but she refused to keep proclaiming the problem, and chose to declare the promises of God. One such promise was “by HIS stripes I am healed.”
So we need to consider what we are going to plant today. My choice is to sow seeds of truth, and edification and exhortation. When I find I have confessed anything contrary to what the scriptures tell me, I will repent. I will turn from it and the lord will forgive me. Consider the harvest you want to reap. Sow the proper seed to reap the fruit you are looking for.
There is a lot to be considered in this passage of scripture. I’ve only looked at one aspect of it. Perhaps I will return to this subject. But the entire Kingdom of God works on that same principle. Be aware of what you are sowing.
